(Plum tree, and the yellow pear tomatoes)
(Orange tree, two red tomato plants)
For family home evening we decided we had to get our garden in, we'd procrastinated long enough. So today the kids and I went shopping for some flowers, tomato plants and strawberries. (That was an event in itself) I found this nursery in town and they were extremely helpful. The owner of the nursery let the kids pick out a free flower of their choice since they were so well behaved. I think she was just trying to send us on our merry little way!Ryley picked out the red flower

Ben picked out the purple flower
They were excited that their dad let them plant them. With a little help, of course.
Olivia, after she sampled the fertilized dirt.
The kids got a kick out of planting the seeds. I was surprised that a lot of the things I wanted to garden were more for the fall. So we gave it our best shot and hopefully should harvest it all in June. (Corn, cantaloupe, summer squash, cucumber, pumpkin, green beans, tomatoes and strawberries.) Both our plum and mandarin orange trees bloomed but I won't hold my breath for fruit. I've realized I lack a lot of faith when it comes to things growing. Updates to come...

That is cute that they all got a flower to plant. Olivia is looking so grown up!
I think that lack of faith comes from being an Arizona girl because I am stunned every September when we harvest all the stuff we planted in May. Of course my in-laws do most of the work--they're the ones with the faith and the experience. I am still amazed every spring when stuff just springs forth from the plain ol' dirt that make up our yard. That NEVER happened in AZ! Either way, it's a miracle and it's a great experience for the kids to nurture something and enjoy the literal fruits of their labors. And I get the feeling that we're all going to grateful to have gardens we can eat from pretty soon (with the way the world is going). I loved all your recent posts and pix--conf weekend looks wonderful!
I'm sure going to miss my garden this year. We rocked it over last summer. We won't pay Prescott's crazy water rates anymore. I guess I'll just have to enjoy the Farmer's Market a little more...
