Things have seemed a little turned upside down the last couple of days. I told Kevin that I can do babies, but puppies are a different story. The first night was a little rough. Tilly was up every couple of hours and whined the rest of the time. Kev and I had the understanding that when we had a dog it would be Kevin's turn to get up in the middle of the night. And he has held up his end of the deal. We're kennel breaking her right now so she's been up at least once in the middle of the night and also around 5:30am. All I have to do is nudge Kevin (he never hears her whining, just like he slept through all our children's night awakenings) and he rolls over and gets up. It's good to know that he could really get up if I needed him to. Now we have to just get her to stop biting everything, including the kids! (I still need to get the bitter apple stuff)
I took Kevin lunch on Thursday and he looked pretty knackered. He asked if this is what it felt like to get up with a newborn at all hours of the night. I replied that it was similar, but until he was cracked and bleeding from nursing a baby he couldn't compare.

This is nate...sounds like getting a puppy is everything you ever wanted. Now you know why puppies are so cute, it is so you don't drown them before they get a chance to grow up. I am sure when she is not causing trouble she is adorable. Good luck with the biting, Paisley was a little digger at first but she stopped. I cannot wait to see you guys in 2.5 weeks.
Okay, my young apprentice. I will pass along much knowledge to you...what you do with it is up to you! #1-Bitter Apple spray (trust me). #2-Understand that Tilly came from a house with lots of other dogs/puppies around. Now that she is with you guys she is trying to exert dominance and establish a pecking order (thus the biting). I'll call you and tell you all our tricks so that we didn't murder our dog when he was going through this phase.
Don't forget to mention being engorged and leaky too...but the getting up at night is a great way to create some empathy. I'm glad he's keeping up his end of the bargain!
Ha! Ha! Loving his slight insight into your life! Rob has that missing gene too that enables him to sleep through night wakings of any description!
lori here:
It will get easier. I know that at this point you are thinking, why the heck did we sign ourselves up for this. Plus, they are much easier than children once they are older because you can just lock them in their kennel and leave for hours and hours. we only woke up with Paisley for one night...and from then on we just let her whine. Good luck!
Oh my goodness!! We are in the same boat! We need to get our dogs together!!
I'm already sleep deprived, no way we are getting a puppy any time soon! Good for you though!
I hope she trains soon for you guys! I know your kids probably adore her especially after she stops biting.
You've been warned. It's good for the guys to get a little glimpse of our lives. THey are just lucky that they don't have to physically hurt. Good luck!
hey katie....can i just say that you are awesome!
